I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to fascinating scientific studies:
At The University of Houston:
My Doctoral Dissertation: “Testing the Utility of the Neural Network Model to
Predict History of Arrest in Batterers.” This study compared two statistical models
(logistic regression and neural networks) to determine which is most effective at
predicting a history of arrest in men who have battered their partners. Models that
included victim report were compared to models that included only perpetrator report.
Results suggest that neural network models that include victim report are most effective
at predicting history of arrest in batterers.
Parenting Attitudes and Personality: I worked with a team of graduate students to
examine how a parent’s beliefs about parenting and their personality style affect their
behaviors as a parent and spouse. Data was collected from undergraduate parents who
were asked to complete a battery of assessments including the MMPI-2 and the PCRI.
Victims Resource Institute: I created and managed databases for the VRI. Data
was collected from victims of crime, primarily child abuse and neglect.
Master’s Thesis: “The Convergent Validity of the MMPI-2 and PCRI’s Social
Desirability Scales.” Evidence suggests that the previously unexamined Social
Desirability Scales of the PCRI perform similarly to the gold standard in such scales, the
MMPI-2.
The Center for Couples Therapy: Also called “The Love Lab” at the University of
Houston. Here, I created a website to advertise our assessment and referral services for
couples and trained research assistants in the use of biofeedback equipment used to
measure physiological arousal in couples while they argue. We administered, scored
and interpreted a battery of assessments designed to examine the nature of the
couple’s relationship. Detailed reports were provided to couples outlining their strengths,
weaknesses and the prognosis for their relationship.
Family Transition Services: I worked on a team of students and faculty,
developing a cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) manual designed to reduce trauma
related symptoms found in families of high conflict divorce.
University of Texas: Dr. George Holden’s Lab at the University of Texas has studied
the effect of “meta-parenting” as a moderator of effective parenting. I assisted on this
project by helping manage the data.
Concordia University: I assisted Professor Anne Schwartz in conducting a study on
the effects of foster care placement on race identity.
